Orthodox
greeting cards from the Lesna Monastery Book and Icon Shop
The
Lesna Monastery Shop stocks several different types of cards:
Many of
our cards are unique; they can only be purchased at Lesna. We
stock cards produced from rare photographs and painted portraits
of the hierarchs of the Church Abroad, greeting cards printed from
the watercolors of Archimandrite Kiprian (Pyzhov), Tamara Sikojev,
or from the artwork of the Lesna sisters and our pilgrims, as well
as greeting cards produced from photographs found in our
monastery’s archives and other sources from the Church Abroad,
from pre-revolutionary Russian post cards, from post World War II
emigre postcards, and from digital photos that originally appeared
in our Live Journal blog, reflecting everyday monastery life.
The
great amount and variety of paper icons that we stock makes
it difficult to present a complete listing, just ask, and we will
try to fill your order or to indicate a source.
Briefly, we have all sorts of icon prints: different size
reproductions of the Montreal Myrrhstreaming Iveron Icon, of the
saints of Western Europe (St. Edward and St. Mildred, for
example), reproductions of the work of our iconographer Mother
Flaviana: Christ’s Descent to Hades, and St. John of Kronstadt,
rare icons of St. Seraphim of Sarov and other saints, icons of the
Holy New Martyrs of Russia.
We
stock a vast variety of greeting cards-- everything from
contemporary Russian multi-colored gold-embossed cards to reprints
of old-fashioned Russian cards printed in New York and Paris. We
are in the process of producing a series of Nativity, Paskha and
namesday cards inspired by Byzantine and Early Russian painted
miniatures. The cards produced from our archival materials, Lesna
landscapes and group shots of our sisters can also serve as festal
greeting cards.
Our
series of portraits of the hierarchs of the Church Abroad
includes a print reduced from a portrait of Metropolitan Vitaly
painted by the artist Ivan Fedoroff. A rare portrait of St. John
of Kronstadt, portraits of Sts. John of Shanghai and Philaret of
New York, of metropolitains Anthony (Khrapovitsky), Anastasy
(Gribanovski), archbishops Anthony
(Bartoshevich), Nathaniel (Lvov) and Seraphim (Doulgoff), Bishop
Leonty (Bartoshevich) are in the works. If you have a request for
a portrait of another hierarch, we will try to locate one.
We are
working on a series of photographic portraits of the Lesna
abbesses: Catherine (Countess Efimovskaya), Nina
(Kossakovskaya), Theodora (Princess Lvov), Magdalena (Countess
Grabbe), Athanasia (Guttenberger). Ask about group photos of the
Lesna sisters from various periods of the monastery’s history.
It is
our special pleasure to be able to offer historical photo cards specially scanned from old cards, prints and
photographs found in our archives. We have a photograph of St.
John of Shaghai with the Lesna sisters taken at Fourqueaux, a
group photograph of Matushka Theodora and the sisters taken in
Belgrade shortly before their departure to France, a picture of
the main Church at Lesna reproduced from a 1906 postcard, a photo
of the Lesna childrens’ choir from the same year, a sketch of
the main Church building at the historial Lesna, a group portrait
of the Lesna artists in their icon studio taken in 1913, and a
photograph of the sisters at a meal in the trapeza at Fourqueaux.
Lesna
life today: scenes of everyday
life, the monastery environs, etc. is captured on cards produced
from the photos and artwork of our sisters and pilgrims.
